Riding In the Rain II

When riding in the rain with your umbrella, you probably don't want to wear a dress or skirt that is going to catch the wind unless you can ride with no hands or you have on very modest undergarments. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden without hands in ages and I don't recall being very good at it. Also, I was wearing very immodest, bright blue underwear that could be seen from a country mile. I had to pull over to the side of the road and stow my umbrella in my basket for the sake of my dignity. I didn't get very wet though; I was almost home.

LOL! Well played.

You stowed your umbrella? Do you have a bag for that? I'm suddenly intensely interested in bike bags, and things we keep in them. I'm hoping you'll share yours...

Here's the invitation

I figure if you walk in the rain with an umbrella, you can ride in the rain with an umbrella, but the next time I wear a skirt in bad weather, I'll wear my nice lightweight raincoat.

I have not had any luck with riding and holding an umbrella at the same time. The umbrella catches the wind too much. :(

I have ridden with an umbrella, but it only in very light showers with no wind. Seldom the case here in NC.

Yes, wind and rain is a bit too trying for riding with an umbrella in hand. I would recommend a raincoat. I have a lovely light one by Spiewak. They make great outerwear for men as well.

I like your blog. If you do get into some urban exploring, maybe you'll want to tell us about it...

Hi

Leave it to the Dutch to find a solution: http://www.drybike.nl/

Don't know if anyone in the US distributes these, but they sure look practical.

bikegirl,
Those are neat...never seen those in the US, might need to rig something up. Basil also makes something similar. There are shops selling Basil in the states, but don't know if they can handle special orders or not.

Hello SGB. You wouldn't be in Athens Ga, would you? I do miss that little town. I get around the modest vs. immodest undies by wearing skorts. I have 3 from Patagonia that are surprisingly sexy and elegant, and actually quite perfect for riding in the rain without hands.

Thanks for the tip, Karen. I'm not in Athens unfortunately (I'd think there would be more to do in a college town). I'm in Bartow county, about 40 miles outside Atlanta and not very far away from Tennessee.'Tis a sleepy town that seems to have blossomed along the railroad line and, later, the interstate. Not much happens here.
